It's coming: Agreement on the Data Act

The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union agreed on a common position on the Data Act on June 28, 2023. Formal adoption is expected this fall. Twenty months after its adoption, the Data Act will enter into force. Manufacturers of networked products and providers of connected services will then in turn have one year to implement the Data Act's requirements for new contracts, probably by mid-2026.

The Data Act is intended to remove legal, economic and technical barriers to the data economy as far as possible. To this end, it will initially be easier for consumers to access data generated when using certain products and services.

If companies want to access data from providers of such products or services, the user can allow the company such access in the future. This is intended to promote the use and exploitation of data from modern vehicles, wearables and networked industrial plants.
